What Is GPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standard way of measuring academic achievement. It converts letter grades or percentage scores into a numerical scale (commonly 0.0–4.0 or 0.0–5.0) so that overall performance can be compared across courses and terms.
How Is GPA Calculated?
The most common method is the weighted GPA:
GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
Where Quality Points = Grade Points × Credit Hours for each course. Unweighted GPA simply averages the grade points without considering credit hours.
What Is CGPA?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall GPA across multiple semesters or terms. It is calculated by weighting each semester’s GPA by the credit hours completed in that semester.
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA
Weighted GPA takes course credit hours into account, so a 4-credit course influences the average more than a 1-credit course. Unweighted GPA treats every course equally regardless of credits.
How to Calculate Your GPA
- List every course, its grade, and its credit hours.
- Convert each grade to grade points using your institution’s scale.
- Multiply grade points by credit hours to get quality points.
- Add all quality points and divide by total credit hours.
How to Improve Your GPA
Focus on higher-credit courses, seek help early, manage time effectively, and aim for consistent performance. Small improvements in several courses often raise GPA more than one dramatic jump. Results vary by individual circumstances and institution policies.
GPA Scales and Grading Systems
Grading scales differ widely between schools, colleges, universities, and countries. A “B” may equal 3.0 at one institution and 3.3 at another. Always confirm the official scale used by your university. This calculator lets you choose common presets or create a fully custom scale.
